Who We Are

Mater Bay Academy Lower School is an A-rated public charter school dedicated to academic excellence, character development, and whole-child education. We serve students in grades K-5 in a warm, structured environment where every child is known, challenged, and inspired. Our mission is to deliver a rigorous, innovative academic program that produces self-directed, lifelong learners. By integrating technology and diverse educational resources within a safe setting, we expect all students to perform at or above grade level and to develop the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Inspiring Scholars. Building Leaders. Shaping the Future.

School Culture

Our community is grounded in six core pillars: Scholarship, Pride, Service, Innovation, Excellence, and Leadership. These values shape our expectations and daily experiences. We cultivate academic rigor and intellectual curiosity so students approach learning with integrity and purpose. Pride in self, work, and school creates a strong sense of identity and spirit. Through service, students learn empathy and civic responsibility, understanding that they can make a positive difference. Innovation is embraced as a mindset, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and meaningful use of technology. We hold high standards of excellence in academics and conduct, and we intentionally develop leaders who are confident, compassionate, and prepared to contribute both locally and globally.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is both challenging and engaging. In English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, students build strong foundations while practicing critical thinking, problem solving, and real-world application. Literacy is woven throughout the day as students read, write, and communicate across genres and subjects. In math, they deepen conceptual understanding and fluency while tackling complex tasks. Science is hands-on and inquiry-based, inviting students to question, investigate, and discover. Social Studies helps them explore history, geography, civics, and culture, building global awareness and a sense of responsibility.

We are proud to offer a gifted program through our science curriculum, where advanced learners engage in enriched, project-based experiences that promote research, experimentation, and deeper exploration of scientific concepts. Beginning in Fall 2026, we will introduce the Cambridge program, an internationally recognized framework that emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, and global perspectives, further enhancing our rigorous academic pathway.

We believe a great education goes beyond core subjects. All students participate in Spanish, Art, Music, and Physical Education. Spanish introduces bilingual skills and cultural understanding from an early age. Art and Music offer opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and performance, helping students discover new talents and interests. Physical Education promotes fitness, healthy habits, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Together, these courses support the development of the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally.

School Environment

To support a focused and respectful learning environment, Mater Bay Academy Lower School follows a mandatory uniform policy. Uniforms promote school pride, unity, and a professional atmosphere that helps minimize distractions and keeps the focus on learning. Families receive clear guidelines on uniform pieces, colors, footwear, and spirit days, and students are expected to follow the policy as part of their responsibility to the school community.

Equally important is our commitment to a safe, supportive campus. Our staff builds strong relationships with students and families, sets clear expectations, and provides guidance that supports social and emotional growth. We want every child to feel seen, valued, and ready to learn each day.

Preparing Lifelong Learners

At Mater Bay Academy Lower School, we nurture the unique potential of every student. Through rigorous academics, meaningful enrichment, strong values, and a caring community, we prepare children to think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, act with integrity, and lead with confidence. We are proud of our A-rated status and even more proud of the scholars and leaders who walk our halls.
